A smoker usually exhibit specific habits and behavior which would that offer clues to a medical practitioner. For instance, people who smoke tend to possess physical traits that represent the effects of tar and smoke. Their fingers and nails may have yellow stains because of recurrent indulgence in the act. Besides, there are other signs that the nurse can focus on especially if the patient does not answer the questions directly. Physical markers such as the smell on the attire or the consumption of chewing gum or breath fresheners can help identify the smoking habit. The nurse may also look for characteristics such as yellowing teeth and shortness in breath.
To demonstrate empathy, the nurse can ask questions that do not project a judgmental and condescending attitude. It will also be imperative to show the patient that his smoking habits are understandable. Creating guilt in the patient’s mind will not particularly assist the situation because it will make the patient uncomfortable and reticent. Instead, open-ended questions may be help getting appropriate response from the patient. The nurse should exhibit interest and concern rather than projecting an attitude that exude opinion and criticism. These questions should reflect a sympathetic understanding of the patient’s perspective.
To facilitate a non-threatening, open and honest communication setting, the nurse must be attentive towards the patient and avoid interrupting or completing the respondent’s sentences. The nurse should also take note of the nonverbal and verbal indicators exhibited during the conversation to foster a setting that promotes trust as well as security in the patient. The nurse may also present proof that he or she is listening to the patient by restating, repeating, or paraphrasing the message. Lastly, the nurse may reduce the limitations or barriers that usually restrict effective communication such as noise or other forms of distraction. To conclude, a nurse can identify a smoker from certain physical markers and employ an empathetic and concerned attitude to provide effective medical help.
