Chapter 12

The term crime is a matter of definition by sociologist refers to the selective application of justice according to a pre-defined or pre-mediated mechanism. In terms of the legal procedures and effectiveness of the applied measures, seem to favor different categories of the offenders while others are alienated against in comparison. When defining crime as inherently political, it determines the targeted category according to legislation and expected outcome. For example, the use of racial profiling took a political statement against the minority groups.   

            Age, class, and race are related to crime and arrests since stipulation is merited differently. Children and adults have distinct measures according to the law. They cannot be categorized as equals despite the criminal offence by the individual. Factors that cause younger, poor minorities to end up in jail as compared to whiter, higher income people are discrimination and belief that the former are more violent and negative in nature as compared to the latter. Changes in moral order crimes can reduce number of people in jails if administered on social values targeting the offenders. With a common view of shared beliefs and norms, this can be instilled in individuals as a social responsibility rather than a laid down rule. Such advances can reduce organized crimes, as the individuals will evaluate their social responsibility in such groups.

            Street crimes stem from retaliatory concepts towards authority, moral order crimes refer to the interference of the public’s function while white-collar crimes are those represented as from political dimension. In the white collar, the state is seen as the victim from corporate decision. The latter bears more damage to society as it affects the state or nation as a whole. The justice system is biased against the powerless due to the divergent handling of criminal cases or crimes against both divides.

Chapter 13

Social power influences the definition of drugs according to the target group especially in matters concerning the effects and outcomes towards the society. The social institutions in this case refer to the select group of people affected by the menace with its importance on crime levels attributed to them like neighborhoods, communities, races, and states. Social policy refers to measures enabled through administration of law enforcement on crime in possession, distribution, and use of the illegal drugs. War on minorities emulsifies the war on drugs in relation to the behavior of authorities towards the minority groups in suspicion of drugs use. The drug laws give exemption to medical cases, while the arrest and release of the higher income individuals of the trade employ the services of protection from the authorities.

            The masterminds of social power define the social problems in the society. For example, the war on drugs is ore of a social problem as compared to crime with a subjective norm. Minimal objective conditions are employed to tackle the issue of drugs, while to the powerful it is a non-subjective format. In order to obtain a solution for drugs use, social policy can be effective depending on the modalities used. With the origin of drugs use, understanding the behavioral, reaction, and enhancement of the individual drug users, steps can be made to tackle the menace. The federal government should increase the monitoring, legal procedures on offenders, distributors, and users while sociologists determine the needs of drugs. Through societal norms and bridging racial divides, education on the negative effects can be availed while rehabilitation of the addicts remains in process.
