The impact on children when a parent or sibling abuses alcohol
III. Paper Requirements
Students are required to submit a topic, list of references, rough draft and final draft as
outlined in the attached schedule. Papers should be eight to ten full pages (not including the
title page and reference list) in length. All facts and ideas derived from reference material must be duly footnoted and credited. Quoting should be avoided as it changes the voice of the paper and does not demonstrate the student’s comprehension of the material (The exception would be
the citation of definitional criteria as in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of the American Psychological Association.) Students are to submit their papers to
www.turnitin.com and revise their papers until they achieve a plagiarism score of 20 or lower.
Please note the following three requirements:
1. The topic must be approved by the instructor. No two students in the class may write
on the same topic.
2. The paper must include a discussion of at least one psychological theory, preferably a theory that was discussed in the articles you read for the Literature Review. For example, a paper on bullying might include a discussion of the concepts and
principles of Social Learning Theory.
3. The paper must include a discussion of how the research on the topic does or does not give us a full picture of the
Global, cross-sectional, interdisciplinary or multicultural nature of psychology!!!!
IV. Grading Standards
The research paper will constitute 30% of the student’s grade. Papers will be
graded by the following criteria:
1. The paper should be a scholarly work reflecting current professional literature on
the topic as well as sophisticated thinking on the part of the student.
2. The paper should be well organized. The student should clearly present the issues,
controversies and problems of the literature on the topic.
3. The style of writing should be clear and concise. References should be footnoted
but not unduly quoted. Keep quoting to a minimum!
4. Quantity and quality of the primary sources will be considered in grading. Professional
journals will be given greater weight than popular journals or nonprofessional books.
5. The final draft of the paper and all the prerequisite material contributing to the paper
should be handed in on time. Late papers will be penalized.
6. Taking three or more consecutive words from a source is plagiarism and will be penalized
as set forth in the Kean University Academic Integrity policy. Students must submit their
paper to www.turnitin.com when they turn in their first and final drafts to the professor.
