The Book Thief Film
The Book Thief Film
The film is set in 1938 where Leslie Meminger, traveling with her mother, loses her younger brother. After his burial, she is delivered to her forester parents while learning that her mother left her due to her being communist (Zusak 15). After befriending her next-door neighbor, she is taught how to read and becomes obsessed. During a Nazi speech, the Major’s wife notices Leslie recovering a book for herself. At the same time, Hans is seen hiding a Jewish son, to a deceased friend. Once Lisa becomes his friend too, he is kept in the basement. After delivering laundry to the Major, she is introduced to the library and welcomed as she pleases. The lives of her friends and family never become the same.
The film succeeds in showing the ethical issue of extremes between human cruelty and kindness. Through contrast, the film shows simple acts of kindness, which giving meaning and helps develop the plot. For example, when Rudy is seen giving as a teddy bear to a dying pilot and the invitation of Leslie into the library, the tone of kindness is achieved, on the other hand, the contrast is successfully depicted when Rudy’s treatment is witnessed under Chemmel and Deutcher’s temperament. It generates the ethical issues addressed throughout the film.
The philosophical approach of The Book Thief Film is reminiscent of
the power in books and writing. When several of the character’s lives are
changed and influenced by the differences through reading novels, the
philosophy is enhanced. There is power to change or influence various aspects
of life, character, or personality through delivery of the message in written
or read means (Anderson
17). The changes are significant and can affect others as well.
