Position Paper

You will prepare an evidence-based defense of a position supporting or opposing a recent policy change (or proposed change under legislative review) in environmental public health.

▪ _Background- approx ½ page- To include an overview of the topic, an introduction to both sides of the argument and a statement of your position.

▪ _Specific arguments- at least 4 required, approx ¾ page each- You will identify at least 4 specific reasons why the evidence for your position (supporting or opposing the policy change) is stronger than that of your opponents. Each rationale should be backed by an ample review of high quality, peer-reviewed evidence in order to demonstrate that you have thoroughly considered the evidence on both sides and applied what you know about causal inference and the impact of environmental conditions on health.

▪ _Summary statement- approx 1 paragraph- You will end your paper with a persuasive concluding statement reaffirming the strength of your position.

▪ _References- All references used in development of your paper will be summarized at the conclusion of your research paper using APA format. A minimum of 6-10 references are expected and these may reflect a combination of published journal articles (scientific, peer-reviewed literature), public health texts and reputable scientific websites.
