The 52-minute film, Maintaining the Truth: Epistles of the New Testament, explored the content and authenticity of the 21 biblical letters in the New Testament. The film was very entertaining and educative. I have watched, read and reviewed many scholarly films and articles that try to explain the history, authors and meanings of the 21 letters. However, this film tends to be more informative and comprehensive. Books, for example Who Wrote the Bilble? by Richard Friedman, fail to provide a detailed history of the authors and the challenges faced by early Christians. Apart from mentioning that Paul once prosecuted Christians, the film also points he made significant contribution to Christianity despite the challenges he faced after becoming a believer. I was intrigued to learn that only seven out of the fourteen letters attributed to Paul were actually written by him. The video shows that difference in interpretation and language barriers could have resulted to the errors. It was also interesting to learn how history, science and Christianity shared ideas and technology to classify letters based on the uniqueness in handwritings and styles of writing used by each author. In addition, the film was very informative because it conducted irrefutable research relating to the contribution of all early Christians who wrote the 21 letters. Furthermore, it provided a brief description of the challenges faced by Christians during the Roman Empire. I was also fascinated by the significant impact made by women towards strengthening Christianity. Despite their insignificant number and prosecution by Roman emperors, they practiced an outlawed faith that later became the imperial religion. Finally, the sound tracks, visual transition and effects made the film more captivating.
