EXAMPLE: Triple Bottom Line—Planet

The Pacific Garbage Patch is a popular environmental concern especially among conservationists and nature enthusiasts because of its peculiar characteristic. It is a collection of dumped waste swept from different shores and locations. The larger part of the “garbage patch” is composed of plastic materials that are considered non-biodegradable. Ecologically, this stretch of waste has adverse effects on the maritime life on the United States shores. However, this problem is not restricted to the United States; it exists in almost all major water bodies in the world. Every time we visited Spain for the holidays, the beaches were strewn with plastic bottles and other debris. The rest of the beaches in Australia were similarly polluted even though the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was the most popular. This manmade feature is a result of the Five Gyres, group of five ocean currents that collects all the trash and channels them into groups. A large amount of the trash originates from tankers, cruise and merchant ships, but a smaller portion of the trash comes from different sources on land. This pollution threat is quite significant and needs to be addressed. It is quite impossible to clean up the ocean therefore, a permanent solution is necessary to handle both the ecological threat and the cause of pollution. One proposal would be to introduce biodegradable materials for packaging and storage. Scientists can also invest in developing biodegradable plastics.

EXAMPLE: Cleaning the Ocean

The innovation and passion exhibited by a Swedish 16-year-old, Boyan Slat towards cleaning up the ocean is a captivating and admirable story. It reflects the efforts of one individual to clean up the ocean using an ocean cleanup array, an instrument used to collect all the plastic wastes without necessarily endangering the lives of maritime flora and fauna. The fact that one boy was able to find such a simple solution while many people with numerous resources were unable to do the same. Most people applauded his effort, but a section of opponents claimed that his system was quite expensive and unfeasible. However, Boyan will require the support of the governments well as the private sector to make his dream a reality.

Philanthropy is defined as the act of performing charitable deeds. The problem arises when implementing acts of philanthropy since there are people who stand to lose. I have had previous experiences with supporting refugees by donating things like old clothes, equipment, and basic supplies. Apart from that, I have also assisted refugees by organizing legal papers for them to be fully-fledged citizens. It was a difficult choice since we could not help all the refugees. Some of them had to be turned down and every time I did this, I was left with a very bad feeling that I could have saved more people. The ability to make important decisions concerning the allocation of resources is a useful skill. In business, making the right decisions within certain constrains without wasting resources is quite difficult. For instance, employing or dismissing employees can be a very challenging task. An individual must always bear in mind that despite the nature of the situation, there will always be a group of people who are not satisfied with the outcome.

EXAMPLE: Political Paralysis

Once in my lifetime, I have felt that I have little power to make a significant change in the world. However, after seeing the story of Boyan Slat, I am convinced that one individual has the power and ability to make massive changes to the mentality and face of the earth. Boyan Slat, a 16-year-old Swede, found a way to rid the oceans of the perpetual problem of pollution using a simple and economical way. His invention is quite motivating and encouraging as it allows the ocean to be restored of its rightful ecological balance. Similarly, an individual can change the life of another through simple gestures such as working in the community or giving someone a lift. Once, I organized and hosted a barbeque for several women and children refugees. At that particular moment, I had never experienced so many people being overjoyed. I also learnt several new things. One, I discovered that not only rich and prosperous people are capable of bringing change into the society. Two, every individual, regardless of their social standing, has a role to play in the society.

EXAMPLE: Instigating Opportunity

Equality in the society means that despite an individual’s gender, age, class and gender, all people can access resources that the government and other parties avail. Consequently, mobility refers to the ability to relocate to a better location politically, economically or otherwise. All human beings deserve equal opportunities despite this being more of a dream than a reality even in the developed world. After the financial depression, most of the families lost their property and jobs. Consequently, the aspect of economic welfare is far from being realized. Other similar failures include the education sector that is highly expensive and not a luxury for all citizens’ children. In the healthcare sector, most healthcare insurance providers still discriminate based on sex and race. Consequently, immigrants and Hispanics end up receiving the worst healthcare services when compared to other American citizens. These and other inequalities illustrate the long way through which the United States and other countries have to go before realizing true equality.
