Risk Management

The attacks of September 11, 2002 in the United States presented an event where the security risks were not effectively managed. The event was marked by coordinated attacks from the terrorist group known as Al-Qaeda. The four attacks occurred in metropolitan area and District of Columbia in Washington and New York City. The terrorists hijacked four airlines containing passengers and decided to conduct suicide attacks by flying into buildings in the mentioned locations. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. The towers collapsed causing fire, damage of the property and loss of lives in the building and surrounding areas. The Pentagon’s western side suffered a partial collapse from the crashing of another airplane while the third was crashed into Shanks Ville after the hijackers were overcome by the passengers on board. In total, 2,996 people lost their lives while the damage incurred was $10 billion (Bashan and Jackson, 2014).

The security risk associated with the events led to the mass loss of lives and damage to infrastructure and property. In order to mitigate and manage the security risk that had been posed, stringent security checks, screenings, and background data-collection procedures should have been used. The entry points of the country had long been targeted as easy access routes from external points. For effective management of the risks associated, the authorities of airports and seaports should have been vigilant. The use of biometric analysis and screening technologies should have been used in detail to all the passengers who were arriving or departing from the country. Enhanced security personnel in collaboration with immigration officials should have enabled relay of information on terrorist groups and their activities. The above mechanisms would have resulted in denial of entry to the terrorists while reducing any threats to security.
