Rhetorical Analysis of Water Scarcity

Rhetorical Analysis of Water Scarcity

Abu Dhabi is a predominantly desert country plagued by scorching heat and wide arid lands. Having experienced an increase in its population due to a rise in immigration, a lot of pressure is placed on certain basic commodities such as water. Its extraction, use and conservation has been detailed in an official business letter and this document forms the basis of the following analysis. The over reliance of logos in the text appeals to sympathy for the farmers and makes the piece rational.

Explanation of Rhetorical Situation

When Abd wrote the letter to Mr. Aziz, he was reacting to the scarcity of water in the Abu Dhabi farms and did so using official means. This was a way of highlighting the problems encountered by farmers due to the lack of adequate water supplies in that nation (Abdulrahman, 2003). Thus, the intention of the writer was to prick the conscience of the authorities for them to realize the severity of the situation thereby mounting a swift response to avoid an escalation of the crisis. Therefore, the piece aims to inform the reader about the water shortage issue in that country in a bid to convince him/her to agree with his view of a call to action.

The author uses a series of pathos whose objectives are to sway the thinking of the reader. For example, he alludes to the financial effect of the problem on households. Furthermore, he singles out the way the schooling of innocent children is affected. The use of the word “innocent” is meant to make the reader to empathize with the conditions that the children are undergoing. In particular, it separates them from the issue and lays blame on the concerned authorities in an effort to increase the pressure on the officials to act. By so doing, the reader is able to form an opinion of the government’s negligence.  Similarly, the writer says that the lack of water has resulted in the death of plants. The application of pathos in the use of “death” is meant to draw sympathy for the crops, as this is a strong word to use in this circumstance (Alhamiri, 2014). Thus, it makes one to mull over the extent of the damage caused by the water shortage and has the potential to make any person to wish for a quick resolution. Furthermore, imploring of the officials to rectify the situation by using the words “ethical responsibility” taps into the belief of the reader of what he/she considers being the right thing or the wrong one. Since most people value the principle of accountability, they would concur with the need for the relevant organization to correct the anomaly. This means that the concerned department should be quick to fix the problems so that the country can return to normalcy.

Likewise, there are numerous instances that the author uses logos to build his arguments. He points out the dependency of farmers on their agricultural activities as a source of income and relates the lack of water to a slow down in farming activities (Jain & Singh, 2010). He then goes further to underscore the point that their lack of participation in farming makes the country to lack food produce. It is forced to import. This systematic analysis of the cause and effect of the problem enables the reader to have a sequential flow of ideas that arrives at the same conclusion to that of the writer. This is because this technique is convincing. In addition, the reasons farmers are unable to pay their bills is given. Since the shortage of water leads to a reduction in farming activities, the author reveals that a corresponding decline in income occurs. With minimum or no money at hand, they default on their bills. Therefore, this logical explanation is able to justify the farmers’ inability to clear their bills. Hence, it sounds rational to the reader as well (Alhamiri, 2014).

The farmers are referred to as breadwinners for their families and this makes them valuable people in the community. It shows that they are responsible people who are focused on their work, as they know that their households depend on them. This analogy uses ethos by exploring the character of the farmers and the seriousness of the challenges they face in the face of an ongoing water shortage. Thus, the author would like to persuade the reader to hold these individuals in high regard and be vocal in expressing support for their plight. In this way, the author is able to achieve his target.

This document has been carefully worded to provide a systematic view of the water problems in Abu Dhabi. The author appeals to certain emotions hence making use of pathos to generate opinions on the need for solutions to be found. In addition, he uses logical sentences in the development of ideas in a clears illustration of the logos style and this makes the text persuasive. Hence, the reader is able to be convinced of the writer’s opinions since the case for a resolution to the water shortage problem is well argued.
