Report on Training Material for Indonesia Expatriates
Introduction
ABC Multinational Corporation is an international company that is involved with trade. With its vast operations in different countries, a prospect arose in Indonesia after the management had successfully analyzed the possibility and profitability opportunity presented in the new market region. In order for the establishment to be smooth process, the management considered sending a bunch of the company managers to train and enable easy transition of handling the operations to the Indonesian counterparts. The expatriates, upon the approval of the management, required a training exercise on the culture and way of life of the Indonesian people in order to reduce culture shock and the negative impacts it carries towards the corporations’ efforts.
Discussion
Culture shock refers to the disorientation of an individual when experiencing a different way of life in new surroundings, new people and environment. The process before adjustment has been observed to have negative impacts on majority of the people who do not have prior knowledge or training about the new environment. This can seriously reduce the productivity and output potential of the individuals as expatriates. Some of the common problems associated with culture shock include language barrier, generation gap, information overload, homesickness and formulation dependency.
Findings
Indonesian economy is actively contributed by both the government and private sector. It has the largest economy in the southeastern region of Asia with a Gross Domestic Product of $928.274 billion, while the per capita GDP is stated as $3,797 (Statistics Indonesia 1). The education policy of the country has a compulsory rule for the first twelve years of all the children. Overall rate of enrolment in the schools is given to be 94% (Statistics Indonesia 1). Business in the country is relatively open and non-stringent to both domestic and international investment.
The trade policies are equitable with world standard organizations for both establishment and active operations. Indonesian people are well known to be warm and kind to foreigners, they are sociable and always mindful of the diversity in different cultures. Majority of the population in the country have strong ties to their oral tradition (Bosrock 112). They are deeply religious while they define their cultures and preserve it. The country faces major toxic policies in fuel subsidies while there are rampant demonstrations on labor laws, terms of services, which can disrupt investments.
Conclusions
Training of the expatriates before deployment in the foreign land, culture and people is a vital tool for any corporation interested in expansion and deployment of its operations in foreign land. This reduces the chances of negative impact on the culture shock expected by the expatriates upon arrival. The pressure presented to expatriates who do not have sufficient information of the new environment and way of life leads to decreased productivity, loss in will to serve and reduces the expected performance potential.
Recommendations
From the findings on the Indonesian
environment, the management requires a solid strategic planning of its
investment opportunity in the country. Proper expatriate planning is vital for
the success of the project. The expatriates require knowledge on the different
languages spoken, cultures represented and appropriate interaction measures
with all levels of citizens in the country. In addition, the rules of law and
varied regulations, especially to foreigners must be adhered to prior to
relocation in the country. Labor terms, conditions and laws that govern the
working environments should be analyzed with immediate effect before the
training of the expatriates on the country’s background information.
