Report Obama #2

            In the speech on A More Perfect Union, President Obama uses the links on first principles from the constitution to the goals he has attained and action taken towards unifying the nation. He mentions of the pastor’s controversial statement on the race issue, which had the potential to denigrate the goodness and greatness of the American people. From the first principles, ‘the People of the United States’ statement is featured in the speech. This is used to show the derivation of sovereignty of the government from the people themselves. In part of Obama’s goal attainment, he highlighted the people of America as being part of these goals. He went further to state that he loved the country and believed in its ideals, and the sovereignty of the people (Wall Street Journal 1). He gave his profile from the origins of his white grandmother to his racial representation of the black community.

            The second example of the first principles used was the statement on forming a perfect union. This refers to the power on the federal government to act on its citizens in a direct manner. This was to enable having enough power rather than narrow or limited kind through actions such as imposing of taxes. In his speech, Obama highlighted the need of the solutions to the nation’s problems. These included health care, education, Iraq war, care to veterans and overseas movement of jobs. Sugrue (1) supports his intention to enhance the need for unity among the people. He gave an account of a white woman who had helped organize his South Carolina’s campaign through personal connection with an elderly volunteer who was black. This helped the formation of a perfect union under his attainment.
