Introduction

The Podcast centers on sports communication interviewed by Doctor Michael Mudrick. His experience as a field communicator was primarily in journalism, finance, and sports writer. He also has extensive experience as a radio sports communicator. He was also able to become a sports writer, particularly in football. He has pursued a masters and PhD in sports management. His main interest was based on the fact that he had an interest in teaching communication in sports at tertiary academic levels. Mudrick has mentioned that sports communication is an emerging important field given the importance it has in the modern society. Stifano mentions that as a teacher, Mudrick is likely to experience success with his students due to his deep interests in this field. Currently, Mudrick is carrying out research in this field, particularly in the behavioral attributes of fandom.

Discussion

Dr. Mudrick was able to offer insightful information on the field of communication in his interview. He mentions the emergence of social media as a tool for sports communication. He states that a large proportion of information in many of the social media platforms are sports related. This can be attributed to the fact that there exists a large market of consumers worldwide. Therefore, this requires constant flow of news, updates, and information through sports media. Another important fact mentioned by Dr. Mudrick was the fact that sports communication is an important tool for appealing to the consumer’s personal dynamics. Sports consumers are invested in sporting activities both financially and emotionally (Sanderson, Browning and Schmittel 103-124; Bragg). He applies the social identity theory to explain the connection that a consumer will have towards a certain team. When the team loses, the consumer will correspondingly feel a personal loss, which will affect him or her emotionally (Burroughs and Vogan 89; Jaimunk and Sureephong 181). Dr. Mudrick also covers the issue of peculiar fan behavior, such as supporting the loss of a peculiar team in order to achieve a desired goal.

The conversation in the podcast raises a few questions. Firstly, I would like to understand why there is an immense interest in sporting activities, and why the fan base is particularly larger than any other field of entertainment in the world. Secondly, it would also be important to understand why the self-extension is directly related to the success and failure of the team a fan will support. Logically, the success or failure of the team will have no physical, financial, or immediate ramifications on a fan. However, the reality is that a majority of fans will be either cheerful, or downcast, depending on whether or not the team won.

Conclusion

I have been able to gain insight into the interview podcast. I liked the episode because it reflected on societal behavior, particularly in the field of sports. I found the information to be interesting because as a sports fan, I was able to gain insight into the communication mechanism and behaviors of both the media as well as the fan base. I was also able to identify certain areas that can be researched further in order to gain more understanding, such as the levels of emotional attachment that fans had, and how they directly affected their behavior in terms of finances such as betting, and in terms of personal behavior, such as how they related to fans of rival teams.
