I think that modern life, because of technological advancements, is resulting in children with reduced levels of physical strength. Based on observations I believe that children are becoming less muscular and weaker resulting in an inability to execute physical tasks that I enjoyed in my youth. I think this is primarily due to minimal exposure to outdoor activities, which has been replaced with modern technologies enabling them to play inside their homes. Furthermore, based on existing research, the decline in outdoor physical activities amongst children in the developed nations, has given rise to high incidences of obesity in the past few decades.

The current generation of children and young adults has become increasingly engaged in online pursuits, at the same time neglecting their social interactions and more so outdoor physical activities. While growing up activities such as rope climbing, tree climbing and riding bicycles around the neighborhood was a common pastime activity. It provided us with the necessary opportunity to interact with new friends and neighbors and to achieve optimal physical and emotional wellbeing.

The high rate of obesity can be attributed to energy imbalance where the calories that are consumed far exceed those expended by the body. This affirms the critical nature of engagement in physical activities amongst children such that they can achieve a healthy level of executive function. The levels of obesity in our community were relatively low given that outdoor activities were encouraged by our parents, teachers, and the society. This was also influenced by the lack of technologies such as video games and online platforms for social interactions. Engaging in outdoor physical activities would provide children in current communities with healthy avenues for reducing weight and achieving effective cognitive function.

I have come to appreciate the experiences we gained while growing up. These outdoor physical activities were relatively effective in enabling me to accrue relevant social skills, which I have continued to use to this day in the exploration of new opportunities, and developing beneficial networks for future success in my career. It is also important to note that there are emergent threats posed by new technologies, which did not exist while I was growing up. In think, the exploratory nature of my childhood has been effective in enabling me to become a risk taker in exploring new opportunities.

Physical activities were not limited to rope and tree climbing but also included swimming, playing baseball, basketball and other extracurricular activities that I took up when I joined the school. In the company of my school and neighborhood friends, we used to gather during the summer holidays and head to a creek in the nearby river where we would indulge ourselves in treats while others swam and engaged in fishing. A small number of children in the current generation, if any, engage in regular swimming and fishing during the summer holidays. I think this is attributed to the reclusive nature of the modern society that has placed an emphasis on individual liberty. In addition, the emergence of new technologies has shifted the priorities of children from engaging in outdoor physical activities to indulgences in video games and online pursuits that pose risks to their wellbeing and safety.

Research indicates that children with minimal social interactions because of confinement in indoor settings risk becoming obese and possessing inadequate and ineffective social and communication skills. The online social platforms utilized by the current generation of children poses a risk to their well-being given that these sites are laden with criminals such as pedophiles and rapists looking for new targets such as young children. Furthermore, children confined in their homes may be subjected to abuse by their guardians or caretakers, with the teachers and friends lacking any knowledge of abuse due to minimal interactions with these children.

I have come to value the nature of my social networks, a majority of which I developed while growing up. Moreover, I think social interactions are critical for the development of children into healthy and responsible adults as this provides them with appropriate skills and knowledge to navigate the modern society. A majority of children resort to drugs as a means of gaining acceptance by their peers. Drug problems have become increasingly common because of undue peer pressure in social settings such as neighborhoods and institutions such as schools and sporting venues.

There is a need to sensitize children in institutions over the importance of engagement in various extracurricular activities as a means of enhancing individual well-being. By exploring various outdoor and indoor physical activities or sports, the children can be able to realize their respective talents at an early age. While engaging in outdoor physical activities such as baseball, swimming, fishing, playing soccer and football, dancing and singing in groups, children can be able to focus on activities that they enjoy. Furthermore, they can be ale to understand and respect issues such as diversity, democracy and the freedoms of other people irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality.

Engagement in social activities, primarily in outdoor physical activities would eliminate the risks of developing and other related ailments such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and hypertension into the future. This would enable the children to be able to optimize the opportunity of living a healthy life with minimal risk of developing such ailments that are associated with sedentary lifestyles.
