Religious Counsel versus Conventional Wisdom
What God puts together no man shall put asunder; is a scriptural verse with unending wisdom that is currently perceived as obsolete, inadequate in these changing times. Unfortunately, the partners in the institution of marriage are the biggest contributors to this trend courtesy of their low tolerance for pain. As man has become modern, the essence of religion and it accompanying attributes has declined (Ammerman & Roof, 2014). Mainstream counseling has become more appealing owing to its simple but temporary solutions. Unlike their predecessors, these experts do not hesitate to suggest divorce as a solution to marital conflicts. My cousin is getting a divorce two years into their marriage. I am emotionally drained by this unprecedented eventuality. Not only because of the personal resources had I invested in the ceremony, but also for its implication on my life. The couple had met through me and I had witnessed their friendship blossom into the ideal relationship.
Given my central
position in their life, I jumped at the opportunity to be the chairperson of
their planning committee. Determined not to disappoint, the wedding was full of
pomp and color; then this happens. I can almost imagine the conversation leading
up to divorce, probably taken from a popular movie they watched together given
contemporary ad verbatim. You are not the same person I married or we are not
heading in the same direction. In the few that end cordially, if that is
possible, it may be followed by, I am not worthy of love, the person that will
marry you will be very a lucky man. Sarcasm or merely making light of my
cousin’s woes are far from my intentions. I just believe that we should reevaluate
our perception of religion and its corresponding advice (Lamanna, Riedmann,
& Stewart, 2014). If anything, the frequency of broken homes is evidence
that something is fundamentally wrong with our source of counsel.
