Philosophy

            Human motivations according Sandel in terms of the economic incentives is based on the cost versus benefit criteria. Each individual weighs the benefits versus cost attributed to the activity before deciding the channel of response in availing it. Sandel’s view is that the economic incentives become motivation as opposed to the demand required from execution of the activity. It also alludes to the creation of social problems due to the presence of incentives as opposed to responsibility like issues of corruption, favoritism, coercion, and degradation in equal measure. It becomes problematic, rather than incorrect, since the complexities surrounding human behavior are determined according to will and the need to self-evaluate as opposed to doing the right thing. It reduces the positive attributes and commendable nature of human behavior when advantage is used over extension of approach towards positive and moral expectations.

            I think that human behaviors should not be determined by the economic incentive alluded to any activity. On both extremes of good and bad, dimensions for changing of human behavior can promote morality or decrease the values. For example, the activity of tipping for service should be seen as form of appreciation for service, not mandatory or expected. On the hindsight, the executing individual should not be motivated by the incentive anticipated in order to avail success on the task. Depending on the character of the individual, the path chosen is then deemed moral or incorrect. The issue becomes problematic in the society when all human behaviors are scrutinized under incentives. It also translates to productivity, even though incentives are not generally responsible for increased input. It should be used as reward for an after-deed of the success.
