Personal Rights: City in Turmoil

            The changes proposed by the politicians are indeed extreme and appear to be outrageous from a superficial perspective. They seem to be grossly violating personal liberty largely and limiting people’s ability to live their lives fully. However, political authorities have the right to limit an individual’s personal liberty as long as it is for the purposes of securing the morals of the society, the public health, security and safety of the citizens, among other social interests. The politician’s proposal to install surveillance equipment in every street corner, inclusive of residential blocks is a great idea to ensure that the city’s area is covered by security camera and that the relevant authorities are watching. I fully support this idea, as long as the cameras would not be placed in a manner that they capture on individual’s private life. In such a situation, this would be a gross violation of personal liberty.

            I find the idea to have every citizen wear a tracking device, which will reveal his or her location all the time to be a violation of personal liberty. The fact that an individual’s whereabouts are known by the authorities at all times may be quite unsettling, especially if the individual likes to live a private and quiet life. Another issue with the tracking devices is the possibility of being framed or wrongfully placed in a crime scene. Sometimes it may be purely coincidental to be in an area where there has been a burglary or a robbery. If an individual has been tracked to be in the area where the crime happened, he may be considered a suspect. Such incidents are avoidable and embarrassing. Therefore, the idea to have people wear a tracking device may not be as viable as the first proposal, which is to install the security cameras. The first proposal does not infringe on personal liberty rights.
