Personal Ethical Principles
My Ethical Perspective
One of the ethical perspectives that are relatively imperative in this case involves the principle of utilitarianism. The concept of utilitarianism establishes the satisfaction or gratification of the common good over a single individual. Utilitarianism tends to focus on the routine life of an individual in relation to the resources provided by the wider community or society. In a rather unbalanced and unequal world, the resources provided to individuals tend to be scarce and therefore incapable of satisfying the needs of every person occupying the community. In this case, an application of the utilitarianism premise induces the need to fulfill the needs and demands of the many over the few. Simply, gratifying the needs of the majority advocates for a support or facilitation of the greater good rather than sacrificing such for the demand of the single individual. Even though the utilitarian perspective may seem difficult and insensitive, it is a rational ethical principle. With the respective premise, the problems that arise in society as an outcome of a scarcity in resources are resolved. For instance, the scarcity of services in hospitals tends to be resolved by ensuring that such resources cater to the largest number of patients while sacrificing the health needs of a single individual.
Application of the Ethical Perspective to the Case
The case under study involves the establishment of a confectionary called Hey Cupcakes and the involvement of the business owner in the process of drug rehabilitation. Despite being successful due to the thriving nature of his cupcake business, Wes Hurt was incapable of ignoring the negative implications of drug and substance abuse within his own society. In this respect, the need to assist the majority by curbing the issue at hand was more important than managing the business without considering the problems facing the society. As such, the perspective of utilitarianism was evidenced by Wes’ actions in taking care or satisfying the needs of the majority by establishing a focus on the problem of drug abuse and dedicating his resources towards its management within the society.
