Peer Support Initiatives

1.         My profession influences my approach to community development based on the objective of my peer support initiative. It is my responsibility as a health promoter to ensure that the dissemination of health services takes place on a grander level. This is different from conservative practices of health promotion, which did not take into account the extent to which people depend on such services. Additionally, current trends embodying health promotion also affect my approach towards community development significantly. Indeed, the present trends within this respective field place emphasis on community-oriented programs. Such programs are meant to utilize several interventions, which comprise the key tactics designated for the attainment of population-level modifications in health as well as risk behaviors. This is evident as per my initiative, which focuses considerably on assisting the disabled. My contact with the social environment has enabled me to take note of the state at which disability has proved restrictive among the affected persons.

2.         Several dimensions of community development were helpful in this process. Foremost, community development places emphasis on freedom from constraint. Taking part in this initiative was based on a desire to better the lives of disabled persons within the community. The need to augment living standards also proved assistive in relation to it being an element in community development. Based on this dimension, I was capable of establishing an initiative that also focused intently on raising awareness, maximizing on citizen power, and engaging the individuals who comprised the focus of the program. With such values, the initiative aimed at improving the standards of living for disabled individuals within the community. Lastly, the disposition towards an integrated communal development process also helped me in establishing the initiative. Community development involves balanced growth. Hence, peer support initiatives aimed at assisting the less capable such as the disabled assist in enabling balanced growth among all persons regardless of their limitations.
