In the Snowman character, it was evident that the issue of poverty played a significant role in the lives of the village members. After Oryx father had fallen ill, she was sold to a strange man (Atwood 96). The man, who bought children was respected among the villagers, and regarded a businessperson. The dependence on the man for financial gain at the expense of losing a child, raises concerns on the culture of the villagers. One cannot equate the value of life in a child to any financial measures. It is un-ethical in all manner of morality as well as concerns of the child’s future. The practice equates to present-day vices like human trafficking, slavery, and discrimination of some sort. Instead, measures that are aimed at promoting the financial ability of the villagers should have been promoted to boost them.
Later
on in the hike, Snowman reflected on the means of ending humanity. Crake had
asked on the imagination of civilization’s ending from Jimmy. The fronted
answer was that of destroying a single generation as the effects on the loss of
technology and other basic functions of systems could not be achieved. It is an
interesting topic especially with the continuous reproduction rates of all
humans in the world. The successive generations are known to follow and take
over any present system of functions as well as improve on the technology
available and in use. I believe that civilization is a continuous developmental
process, which is not determined by a single action or decision. Therefore,
trying to end humanity through eradicating a single generation will only affect
a small portion of it. Newer and better forms of systems and technology would
be innovated to solve the problem.
