Militarization of Police
People are concerned over violations of privacy and seizing of the constitution by the militarization process. The increased number of home raids by police task forces without unprecedented notice is a concern amongst the citizens over the safety of their private matters. Civil liberty is also a concern given the allowance of the military to detain an individual without trial[1]. The increased level of power accorded to police force by the militarization process questions whether the public is guaranteed on the police not overusing their powers or overstepping boundaries. I view this as a problem as militarization assures no privacy. Homes, schools, churches and all public venues will be under surveillance. Moreover, increasing the power of an already corrupt department is atrocious. Increased surveillance in public space is acceptable and beneficial to citizens as it elevates security. The police should incorporate the public in such decisions to increase acceptance and overall effectiveness.
The author’s main argument is that militarization is a new form of urban security that is more effective in securing a country’s borders. In the journal, the author argues that through the process, the army would be able to monitor movement in and out of the country and map out possible threats from neighboring states[2]. The author uses statistical data on increased terrorist occurrences as the basis of argument that necessitates militarization. The asymmetric war or fourth generation war that has elevated terrorist, political, and military assaults is evidence offered to support the argument. In the war, urban areas have become the targets of assaults. Equally, the author argues that cities are now geographically localized allowing use of technological surveillance. The author is accurate in depicting the elevate threats on urban areas given the high populations present. In this, the need to militarize cities is acceptable.
