Live Speech on Managing Stress

Daniel Levitin is a brilliant neuroscientist who has won various awards in his medical field. He is also a musician, a record producer and an author of three bestselling books. These books include This is Your Brain on Music, The Organized Mind, and The World in Six Songs. His speech “How to Stay Clam When You Know You’ll Be Stressed” was on TED. The live talk was conducted in Ted Global. It was part of the yearly five-day conference, which was held on October 19th.

The speech started at 10.00 a.m. The size of the conference room was spacious and suitable for the conference. The atmosphere was calm and air-conditioned. The podium was raised to a level where the speaker was visible to the audience. The temperature within the conference room was cool. The number of people presents in the room was about 1100. Some of the common attributes of the individuals that attended the conference was they were middle-aged, highly educated in the fields of medical science and most were professionals in this field as well. Additionally, the audience was of mixed gender.

David, who was the speaker, was very enthusiastic and drew the audience in by narrating a personal experience that related to the speech. The speech topic was “How to stay calm when you know you’ll be stressed”. The topic fit the audience because, in highly demanding jobs such as those that specialize in medical fields such as neuroscience, surgery, nursing amongst others, there is a likelihood of stress being a deterring factor in improving work performance.

The primary goal of the speech was to educate the audience on managing stress levels in stressful situations. The second goal was to inspire the audience to accepting their situations hence being empowered to manage them better. The speech thesis focused on elaborating on a phenomenon known as prospective hindsight and its effectiveness in the pre-mortem analysis of impending catastrophes that might happen.

The main point of the speech is to understand the function of the hippocampus, which is resourceful in storing information about the locality of important things at work, and home as well. In the speech, the speaker used narration to relay his thoughts concerning stress and the functionality of the mind in these situations. This is observed when he narrated how he lost his keys and misplaced his passport on the same day. Narration within the speech was effective as it allowed the audience to relate to his personal experience and draw scientific rationale that explained his actions.
