IPhone 5 Biography

IPhone 5 Biography

The iPhone 5 is the sixth born of the Apple Smartphone family released in 2012 under the guidance of Tim Cook and features significant design and performance improvement features from its earlier siblings (Lett 1). The iPhone 5 is made by Foxconn in China for Apple Inc. and is the company’s shortest production Smartphone with one year of production. IPhones command a huge brand following especially in the US and Europe due to their innovative features and cutting edge performance. Their brand recognition is so good that Apple sells well over a million units of their Smartphone just a few days after their release to the markets. They were the first phones to feature touch screens and have a dedicated application store where owners could purchase and download applications increasing their utility to owners’ productivity and entertainment (McFedries 2).

In the Smartphone market, iPhones have long maintained their sit at the top though other manufacturers are now offering better performing phones that can rival the iPhone in both performance and aesthetics (Rich 1). Being pioneers in the Smartphone manufacturing industry, Apple have set the pace for most of the other manufacturers’ innovations as most develop their phones to beat the iPhone. The iPhone 5 fairs well among its rivals with the exception of its camera that does not perform as good as other models in the same price range that offer better picture and video quality by using superior lenses and picture processing technologies. The iPhone 5 also lags behind in the applications department since most of its applications are premium versions requiring purchase while other manufacturers offer open source and free applications making them more popular and better from increased developer enthusiasm.

The iPhone 5 was wholly designed by Apple Inc. in the US though its manufacturing, as has been the case with all other iPhones, is outsourced to Foxconn in China. Outsourcing the iPhone 5’s manufacture to the Chinese enables Apple to make their Smartphones available to the public at an affordable price. There have been many complaints that the working conditions at the iPhone manufacturing plants are less than ideal with many putting the blame on Apple Inc. The plants are accused of having long hour shifts with often mandatory overtimes and offer their employees cramped accommodation facilities. New staff orientation and training is inadequate forcing most of the new employees to learn while on the job, which takes time and they suffer from constant yelling from their supervisors. Apple tries to supervise its supply chain to ensure good governance and fair treatment though they have very little influence on the policies of other companies and might be unable to ensure sustainability of any changes they are able to influence.

I purchased the iPhone 5 at the Apple store when they were released and had to camp outside the shop for over 5 hours to be among the first people in line to own them. I previously owned a basic phone and had wanted to go for the iPhone’s fifth installation but decided to wait for the iPhone 5 when the expected new features were leaked. The iPhone 5 has a lot of value and utility for me as I have many meetings and lectures that I need to plan and organize for, as well as take notes that I record on my phone. The applications available to improve organization and productivity have proven invaluable in helping me juggle my academics, personal life, and my budding career in student politics. Indeed, the iPhone 5 has also gone a long way in furthering my social life in school, as it is a real conversation starter and fashion accessory.

Globalization is at the heart of the iPhone 5 model from inception to when the units are purchased by their final user. The iPhone is designed by Apple Inc. in the US where a group of talented individuals from all over the world put together design and performance factors to come up with the best possible product. Once the designs and technical specifications are done, they are sent to their manufacturing contractors in China who make the iPhone 5 come to life. The finished Smartphones are sent to the US where they are installed with their operating system and are ready for shipping to outlets. The software team also comprises of talent from all over the globe that deal with the coding and testing of the system and stock applications to make sure they work perfectly. The final bundled products are also tested to ensure that all the parts and software are working correctly and adhere to Apple Inc.’s strict product quality standards.

The products are shipped to Apple stores and other retail chains and mobile carriers around the globe where can get them for a fair price. Apple Inc. employs many people from the countries they operate out of especially in their stores to help consumers know how to operate their new devices and offer after sales services and support. The beauty and brilliance of the iPhone 5 are only possible due to globalization, which incorporates the views and expertise of people from all over the world to come up with the unique product that is the iPhone 5.
