Hello Jane

The clouds had gathered up in the sky, and it had suddenly become dark. Jane looked at the clock on the wall, and it was only three o’clock. The wind was blowing strong, banging the windows and doors upstairs with a deafening sound. She was startled and ran upstairs to close up, knowing down mother’s swivel chair on the way up. The lights went off, suddenly leaving the house dead silent. Her room was a mess, as she pushed to the side the clothes on her bed and covered herself in bed.

Being alone in the house was sending chills down her spine, as she was quite superstitious. Watching horror films had done a number on her. Billy, her elder brother, had left for football practice and would not be coming home anytime until after dark. She checked her texts; none had come in, from the sheriff. She had suspected that someone had been stalking her; she was unsure if it was her paranoia, but she still had reported the incident. She would find the windows to her room wide open and feel someone following her during her morning runs in the woods. She once saw someone, wearing a hood, ran across her yard at night. Someone had to be watching her. What did they want?

The clock downstairs was ticking away loudly as if doing a countdown. Her phone rang; Ayden was downstairs at the door. “What took you so long to open?” Ayden asked. “Oh! Sorry, I was upstairs in bed. It is cold, come on in. What is with you and wearing black dresses as though you heading for a funeral? You need to brighten up.” “By now you should know I am like this prophetess of doom.” Jane lightly shoved her off the way, and they headed for the kitchen. Then kitchen had dim lighting as it was away from the trees. They sat on the counter and caught up on the latest developments with Ayden’s job applications. She had trained as an electrical engineer and had been out of campus for a year, doing internships in various firms.

The lights came back on, and then off, repeatedly for about five continuous minutes. It was as if someone was playing a joke on her. When the lights came on, they reminded her of the relief she felt whenever her stalker let her alone. Ayden was upstairs when Jane noticed someone run across the yard, into the backside of the house. She screamed so loud that the birds on the trees scampered away. Ayden came down running, “What is it?” “He is here!” “Who?” “I do not know! He is in the backyard!”

Panicking, she tried to call the sheriff, but the storm had messed up with the signals. They heard a loud bang, as though someone had knocked down the door. They ran behind the kitchen counter, holding each other, crying, and trying not to make a sound. What did he want? They could hear the intruder spray paint the wall in the hallway. They sat still, hearts racing, palms sweating, as they heard the sound of his footsteps approaching the kitchen counter. It was as if death was slowly coming for them. They held each other tighter, now audibly crying. He stopped. They could feel the stench coming from his boots, and with his heavy breathing, they could tell he was big. They felt hopeless as he cocked his gun and let out a deep sigh and said, “Hello Jane.”
