Francisco Bethencourt’s Racisms
Over the years, different groups of people have demonstrated racism in different ways based on such factors such as ethnicity, religion, and skin color. The majority have found ways of ruling and discriminating against the minority. This has happened in different places such as America and Germany. The Ottoman Empire and the Russians also discriminated against the minority. The development of a superiority complex has had the effect of subjugation of peoples. In countries such as South Africa where the black people are the majority, the idea of one race being superior above the rest has taken a stronghold and this manifested itself through the creation of apartheid. Black people were exploited for economic gains in South Africa and southern America. They were segregated from the whites and secluded through official laws established by the states. The laws denied the black people equal opportunities and the chance to make economic achievements through exclusion.
The belief that one race or group of people is more superior to the other has been a major cause of racism during different periods in history. In Germany during the Nazi regime, the Jews were not exploited economically but they were discriminated against because of the belief that they were inferior compared to the Germans. There was a general widespread of animosity directed towards them. In addition, racism manifested itself through social and class differences as well as gender roles and ancestry. In some areas such as Spain, there was general emphasis on purity of blood. Some religions were considered more superior to others and the mixing of people from different religions was considered a sign of impurity.
The perceptions that one race or group of people is better or more superior to the others have led to inequality. Men have historically considered themselves better and this has offered them certain privileges. The dominant religions of Christianity and Islam have generally contributed to inequality. This has led to the exploitation of one group over the other as well as the exclusion of one group from a certain area. The Turks massacred the Armenians in the early part of the twentieth century. Different factors such as nationalism and religion played a key role in the mass murders.
