Discrimination

Introduction

After the terrorist events of September 11, 2001 in America, there has been increased discrimination against Middle Eastern men based on their religion through the media in the United States. The terrorist attacks were conducted by Al-Qaeda group, notoriously known for their Islam religion that led to loss of lives and damage to the World Trade Centre amongst other properties. Discrimination of the Middle Eastern men has been effected according to the religion, language and appearance difference, with religion taking precedence especially in the media. Due to the American stance on war against terror, the rate of discrimination has increased to unprecedented levels with the public accepting all forms of the prejudice even to innocent faithful according to their religion as perpetuated by the media.

Discussion

Visual discrimination has been the easiest avenue to discriminate against the Muslims. Appearance is readily available and the media has catapulted the practice through the distinctions between skin color and choice of clothing. With the former, the media presents the skin color being different to the natives while portraying the Muslim men with long beards and the pigmentation. The choice of clothing is associated with the females dressing up in the hijab, a religious black dress that covers essentially their whole bodies up to including the face except for the eyes. The biases are represented through forms of distinction and the direct implication on the religion they represent.

The second discrimination is enhanced from the accent and language of the Middle Eastern men. The language use or accent associated with an individual denotes the origin area or place. Through the media, the discriminated individuals are presented as naïve or slow. Misinterpretation of the language also occurs as a form of prejudice. Since there are thousands of dialects from all over the world, mistaken interpretation is deliberately made available to the masses on both print media, audio and visual sources. It brings contempt of the people that do not hail from the same regions. The Middle Eastern men are presented as arrogant, filled with evil intentions as well as unfriendly tendencies to other religions.

Negative portrayal in publications has increased the rate of discrimination against the Muslims by the media. Publications on matters of national security, alerts on safety and precautionary warnings contribute to the prejudice against the Muslims. For example, when revisiting the past cases of terror attacks, insecurity in the Middle East and worldwide concerns on terrorism, the Muslim are given the spotlight. Such avenues increase the negative image depicted to other races, religions as compared to them. In this regard, the common citizens continuously view the Middle Eastern men as negative elements in the society despite the existence of innocent, legal and law-abiding citizens from the same religion.

Conclusion

Discrimination is an act of depriving social participation to an individual due to the prejudice according to the category placed on them. The Middle Eastern men in the United States have faced discrimination in a growing trend, especially through the media. It follows the events of terrorist attacks on American soil concerning the religion of the offenders. The media has become an easier avenue for spreading the bias as it has the capacity to reach the masses in easier and quicker means. Through the presentation of visual appearances, choice of dressing, religious acts and beliefs, the Muslims continue to face discrimination.
