Critique: “Watch the Monty Python-Influenced Chinese Propaganda Ad That’s Going Viral”, by Angela Doland

The post, “Watch the Monty Python-Influenced Chinese Propaganda Ad That’s Going Viral”, by Angela Doland covers the latest efforts employed by the Chinese government in disseminating propaganda to its citizens. Over the years, the respective government has taken part in different efforts aimed at concealing civilian dissatisfaction. Moreover, with social media sites such as Twitter blocked and harsh media regulations in place, it is quite hard to convey messages that criticize or oppose the country’s authoritarian leadership. To depict the extent the government is prepared to convey propaganda, Doland introduces the reader to the past antics used by the government in respect to this issue. Using this information for a comparative aim, the author depicts the government’s departure from conventional ways of advertising Chinese propaganda. As an outcome of this, Doland introduces the new advertisement propagated by the Chinese government, which is “reminiscent of Terry Gilliam’s vintage cartoons for Monty Python” (Doland para. 2). Additionally, the post covers other aspects that are particularly interesting as evidenced in the advertisement. For instance, the use of a ‘poop joke’ depicts the considerable deviation of contemporary Chinese propaganda ads from past norms. For the most part, it is impossible to avoid the government’s inclination towards the power of the Internet. Nowadays, videos submitted or posted via the Internet have become the norm in an age considerably defined by technological dynamics. Even in its quest to restrict participation in social media sites, the Chinese government cannot ignore the implications that the Internet imposes on its ability to convey its messages. As such, this propaganda ad acts as a reflection of the government’s conformity to modern society’s technological inclinations.
