Confined Space, It Is Bigger Than You Think

Occupational safety and maintenance of good health is all about taking the initiative to anticipate and evaluate the possibility of accidents or damage especially to someone’s health. Different occupations expose people to different dangers among them the malfunction of dangerous machinery, leaking of toxic substances, electricity related dangers or psychological issues related to stress (Great Britain 12). The engineering sector is one of the most technical places of work and thus safety in the operations and in daily activities is of grave importance. This shows that creation of a domain that analyzes all the structures, skills required and distribution of knowledge on safety is necessary. This is so that the team can come up with “building blocks’ responsible to coordinate and implement occupational safety systems to protect both the workers and the environment. There are various areas and reasons for emphasizing safety in the technical areas of work.

The aspect of occupational safety and health has greatly evolved especially due to changing responses in social, political, economic, and technological areas. In the recent years, there has been the advancement in technology, development in both communication and transport and shifts in organization practices. Such changes have caused regeneration of new patterns of hazards, exposures and risks, as well as, pressure on the global environment of interaction. In most occupations, measures have always been in place preventing accidents at work and these systems are often improved. In most safety-related cases, it is obvious that accidents do not just occur but rather they take place because measures were not already in place preventing the incident. Regardless, there are many cases of work-related injuries especially in technical professions and there are certain measures that can be taken to prevent worsening the situations. The most important action is identifying the principles that should be used when determining whether the place of work is safe for its workers.

The first action is ensuring that there is the absence of risk of the employees by placing a reasonable system in place, one that gives safety policies and emergency evacuation procedures to all workers. This creates the foundation that shows that the work place has the ability to handle, control, and prevent any hazards that rise at the workplace. In addition, this ensures that all legal obligations are adhered to at all times and that the standards of the work environment are met.

Once the system is in place, the workers, employees, and employers alike ought to identify all the possible hazards that could take place or any areas that could cause any kind of harm. This is important because occupations vary and the dangers in one place may differ from the ones in another (Slivker 37). In the technical fields for instance, there are different things that the workers work with. An example in the engineering field, there are those that major on electricity hence measures to safeguard from shock or short circuits are taken. If the concentration is mechanical, it may involve handling of machinery that is also dangerous and very common in causing hazards among others.

Once the risks are identified, the next step is to access the probability of the harm to occur and the level of harm it may have on the victim or the place of work. Risk assessment is therefore a valuable asset in occupational safety because it helps in arriving at a reasonable safety plan (International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering 47). In any business, the ability to regulate the company expenditure and to abide by the law enough to cover any probable injuries ensures that the system created is not over complicated. Likewise, when carrying out the assessment the main areas that require preventive measures are fully thought out making sure that every measure has been taken to prevent harm.

Risk control measures are also vital as, in most cases the law has come up with certain goals that need to be reached to create reasonably practical standards. Therefore, the company has to ensure that any measure taken is long lasting and achievable and once in place, training can take place to explain the procedures (Zwetsloot 31). Further, keeping records of accidents, liability insurance information and notifying the likes of Health and Safety Executive (HSE) may be advisable. Lastly, the local authorities also need to be informed on the same to ensure that they are aware and that they have given approval.

Overall, Occupational safety and health is important in every place of work but the probability of harm, as well as the intensity vary form one place to another. In all technical areas for example, the issues that may cause harm are numerous starting from the heavy machinery, to the toxic releases especially gas. Indeed, it is not possible to avoid completely the accidents because they are bound to happen, but the use of the preventive measures lessens the probabilities. The use of the three principles such that the system is put in place, a reasonable risk assessment is carried out and the Risk control measures are established, making the process complete.
