Daniel Shivitz has realized great success as the manager of The Copy Center, a small business that deals with duplicating and desktop publishing. This is despite the fact that he faces direct competition from two other national chain copy stores. His store is located near a large university. However, the secret to his success lies in his leadership style. He has eighteen employees, most of whom are full time students. He has created a favorable work environment for his workers. He has made his work flexible by allowing the employees to work around their school schedule. He has created a good culture that makes every person feels included.

He has found ways of making work tolerable for the workers by identifying the needs of the employees. Workers at the duplicating section have to cope with tedious work. To counter this, Shivitz gives them the choice in selecting the background music in their section, gives them permission to wear comfortable clothes, and encourages communication among them. He engages in their activities and he makes them feel significant. Most of the employees in this section are part time workers and he talks to them informally.

Daniel’s ability to recognize the needs of the different workers benefits the employees in the desktop publishing section. Since the work there is more complex, the employees work on full time basis. Workers at this section tend to be more self-assured and independent. They are self-directed and motivated. Daniel gives them more freedom and space in how they choose to work but he makes it known to them that he is available when they need help. Daniel is knowledgeable in his work and he is able to assist the workers whenever they have a problem in anything. Daniel’s leadership style has led to increased profits because of his company’s good reputation of providing high quality services.
