Different projects require personnel, resources, and time in order to be complete. Such issues need to be identified and scheduled to reduce the cost and hours spent while carrying out the tasks. The biggest challenge in project scheduling is the design variation. Design variation is an alteration to the scope of work in any building contract. The concept considers modifications, such as addition, omission, or substitution. It interferes with the cost and timeliness of a project, as it requires additional evaluation, planning, and analysis before commencement. Additionally, the contractors may need to evaluate the availability of resources before beginning the project.

Construction projects are associated with upstream and downstream pressures, therefore requiring contractors to schedule operations and resources. Design variations affect the procurement of materials and storage procedures.[1] They also affect handling at various logistical areas, proving to be a challenge to the scheduling process. Scheduling messes are associated with unbudgeted financial outlays and affect the ability of the contractors to meet the client’s requirements.

Project timelines are susceptible to the sheer volume of activities that require the identification of dependencies, a compilation of estimation duration, determination of accountability, and setting of sequences. Additionally, the contractor needs to establish new approaches to risk management in order to ascertain the reduction of any issues.[2] In case the contractor is to schedule activities in sequence, they are likely to be changed in tandem to account for the variation.

Project plans need organization and management in order to be successful. However, design variations interfere with the project scheduling initiatives, threatening the time and cost of a project. Projects that vary from the original design, scope, and definition are likely to affect the scheduling process.
