A Romantic Misinterpretation

Indeed, for every individual, there is usually that single instance where experience does more than inform him or her. As human beings, we are taught that mistakes define the steps that we will take. As we age, we are faced with several decisions, which commonly cause a ripple effect in the days to come. As a 24-year-old male studying Information Technology, I have come to realize that life produces several situations, which we are required to face in order to grow and develop. Even though one may argue that such a thought is ludicrous, there is validity to my statement. In my case, experience managed to make me change my life by causing me shame.

Before this newfound wisdom, I lived my life on the edge. In spite of taking my education even more seriously, I normally concentrated on appealing to the opposite sex. The theory behind this was based on the peer pressure brought on to me by my comrades. Interestingly, they often told me that the mind of a man is wired to focus extensively on women. As evidence of their mantra, all of them pursued relationships with the females despite being aware of the negative implications that such activities would pose on their grades. Regardless of this, I also became fond of such indulgences and as such, decided to take part in looking for a potential girlfriend.

Within the first week of my search, I met a woman I still consider as beautiful to this date. Her name was Lucy. She was one semester behind me in my IT class. I had always noted her for her beauty and the way she normally had a bevy of equally pretty women surrounding her. At first, I normally stayed away from making any approaches. The reason for this was completely based on her prized looks and the company of persons she normally had every time I saw her. However, with encouragement from my best friend, I decided to approach her. After all, the worst thing she could do to me was only say ‘No’.

Therefore, with my shaky confidence and fast-paced breath, I approached her cautiously. In such a situation, it was imperative for me to maintain an appealing and unruffled appearance. This was based on the information provided by dating and courting websites, which I scoured through on a usual basis. Nonetheless, with many thoughts consistently hindering me from being completely calm, I still walked towards her hoping that she would notice me with her big blue eyes. Coincidentally, our gazes met as I drew nearer and at that precise instance, she started fidgeting her hair in a flirtatious manner. As I gathered confidence based on her signals, a loud voice echoed behind my back: it was Chad, the most popular person in school.

At that point, my mind started connecting the pieces. As I froze in my step, I finally learnt that Lucy’s attention was not directed at me but the school’s linebacker as he ran towards her. To prove myself wrong for thinking that it was a misinterpretation, I looked towards her direction only to see her in the arms of the man in question. Within that instance, I turned back trying as much as possible to act as if nothing happened. I could hear a few snickers from some of the students within the vicinity but that was not enough to deter me from getting away from that place as far as I could. One year later, I look back to this particular event and I laugh from it based on how naïve I was.
