Picturebooks

The primary objective of developing a picturebook is usually to enhance the multiple literacies such as visual literacy of students. Picturebooks utilize both visual and written elements towards communication of ideas and the development of meaning or overarching themes for the readers. Some picturebooks may lack text, but remain relevant and effective in the communication of critical themes. In the proposed picturebook, there is a careful combination and selection of visual elements or illustrations and text to provide the readers with an effective understanding of the information and themes communicated. The interaction between visual illustrations and text is critical and effective in the development of interesting and unique work of art for use by current and future generations.

Color

Color is an important consideration and critical towards developing interesting and captivating works of art. Color is observed for its lightness, saturation, and hue. This provides a means of differentiation and developing interest amongst readers. Blue and green are cold or cool colors and are used to suggest ideas and themes such as serenity, and renewal. In addition, blue is utilized to suggest themes of depression, sadness and induce a melancholic mood. Yellow and red are hot or warm colors, which have been utilized as a suggestion of excitement, warmth, and cheerfulness (Serafini, 2014). On the other hand, red was utilized as a signification of danger and yellow to denote fear and cowardice.

Shape, Line and Texture

Shapes are known to vary on their levels of simplicity or complexity and rigidity. Round shapes are utilized to denote issues such as comfort, stability and security based on the storyline. Square or rectangular shapes are used to communicate excitement, agitation, confusion, and alarm and invoke similar emotions on the audience. The texture of objects utilized provides varied impressions and invoke diverse emotions of the audience. The texture is utilized to enhance the realistic aspects of the pictures used in the book. The texture of the book is reliant on brush strokes, layers of paint and pencil marks for communication of ideas and information to the audience.

Characters and Icons

The picturebook utilizes characters that resonate with various themes of ethics, morality, and positive versus negative virtues (Barone, 2011). The characters utilized provide the readers with important skills in terms of contrasting visual elements, colors, and cues used to communicate the information to the readers.

Composition and Viewpoints

The picturebook utilizes a specialized approach toward enhanced rhythm and movement to optimize on attention of the readers (Arizpe, Colomer, & Martinez-Roldain, 2014). The book places the protagonists on the left side of the book and antagonists on the right given that readers in western countries usually identify closely with objects located on the left because reading moves from left to right. In addition, there is also the utilization of tension between the words and illustrations used to depict the themes and information communicated to the audience. This is critical towards enhanced interactions between the words and pictures to create excitement and enhanced attention towards completion of the reading. The layout also assumes a critical aspect in creation of rhythm of the story in terms of creative placement of pictures. Wide pictures are important for narrative illustrations as it improves positioning of the settings in relation to the characters to improve the narrative quality of the images or pictures used in the book.
