Summary

The Flea by John Donne communicates on the author’s plea to bed a young woman, who he has admiration for from a distance. The flea’s role in the three characters shows that its intake of blood is significant to the intended purpose of making love as it acts as a connector. The insistence of the flea’s action without wooing her gives the author impetus on the similar intention, but with a consented effort from her. The death of the flea by the woman’s action regenerates the author’s claim that its innocence in the process has a lasting effect towards the intimacy. The lines from nineteen to twenty-seven offer a distinct analytical aspect of the author’s literary use and the effective denotation of the language use. The undiminished honor of the author’s plea to the young woman sets the tone for the poem.

Discussion

The author uses imagery is symbolic towards the author’s plea for his advances to the woman. In the nineteenth line, he uses the word sacrilege to enable the understanding of the involved number of three killings. At the conclusive analysis, the use of the poem’s imagery and symbolism is reminiscence to the topic on sex. There is no consulted framework on the simplistic use of the author’s language as he uses the attention to show his desirer for the young woman. It is also symbolic of his conventional methods in trying not to be rash on the issue as he considered the response from the young woman. By using the flea and pertaining to it survival, he achieved effective masking of the intent. The reader is only able to grasp the intent once the symbolism is allayed to the use of romantic gesture in the process.

On the literal level of explanation, John Donne uses metaphorical imagination to affect the reader’s mind. The setting of the poem is dependent on the author’s capability in outwitting the reader, and submission into his pleas. He uses simplistic denotation of the flea to show a complete literal setting of conviction. In that, he tries to carry the reader’s mindset in showing his intention with the woman through a carefully plotted term of convincing. In addition, he also signifies hi intent on winning the battle of mindsets by using metaphorical thoughts in the process. Rather than being blunt about the subject of his pleas, he decides to outwit the conclusion of both the reader and the female character in the poem. He takes the guilt of the flea back to the woman in order to show humanistic nature therein.

The ideas discussed in the poem appear at different concessions of the lines between the nineteenth and twenty-seventh. For instance, in the twenty-third lines, he states that the aptness to kill him is likened to that of the flea’s loss. In the end of the conversation, he also alludes to the flea’s death as that of honor to each of the three involved characters through the flea, the woman, and himself. In the lines, the author is categorical in maintaining the message delivered all through, as his intention should border on the willingness of the woman as compared to having his way. He achieves the latter although the twist is realized when the woman kills the flea. His bargaining power is reduced and that is why he shoulders on the honor bit to affect a change of heart from the woman.
